Humaira 'Hani' Khan is indisputably the most popular girl at her Dublin high school—that is, until she comes out to her friends as bisexual. Less than receptive, they protest that she cannot conceivably be bi if she has never kissed a girl. She steeled herself for biphobia from her parents—which in retrospect was needless—but not from her closest friends. Impulsive with stun, Hani quips that she "is, in fact, in a committed relationship." And to displease them all the more, she appends "with Ishita 'Ishu' Dey"—the most hated girl of their year. Hani and Ishu are the only two brown girls in their student population—but while they are both Bengali, they are not at all cordial. Ishu is the antipode of Hani. She is poised for valedictory, but approval from her peers could not be farther away. To crown the A’s on her transcript, Ishu wants the honorific, "head girl." But that means winning the popular vote, and popularity is something Ishu is more than wanting. So, she corroborates Hani’s lie…but in return for a more mutually beneficial pact: her ‘girlfriend’ must use her reputation to get Ishu elected. But however transactional their start was, real feelings manage to sneak up on them.
