A year and a half have passed since the onset of the Tox pandemic—since the island-bound Baxter School for Girls locked its doors to the outside world, isolating Hetty and her still-pure peers within its walls. First, the parasite crept into the teachers. Then, it turned towards the students. Now, the remaining girls have pledged never to step past the farthermost fence—past campus property, past containment. Just stay put and wait out the cure they were promised. Those are the terms of their quarantine. But when Byatt goes missing, all plans follow her out the door. Literally. Hetty is resolved on getting to her, even if it means leaving the Baxter bubble and braving the Tox-infected woods beyond. But on the other side of the grounds is what none of the girls could have braced for.
